totsbots reusable nappy

Many parents are still unaware of the vast array of options out there when it comes to modern reusable nappies, and that the
stereotyped terry cloths with pins, being soaked and boiled is really a thing of the past! Instead, the modern world of cloth is alive and vibrant
and the information, support and choice now available is outstanding. Here are our 10 Top Tips when it comes to starting out on that journey of
cloth!

1) Check out your local council for any real nappy incentives they might offer- some will offer cashback or vouchers, and others offer nappy trial schemes which may prove useful. Council authorities are usually very keen to promote real nappies, as they spent a fortune every year sending disposables to landfills. If your local council doesn’t offer any incentives at present, why got get in touch with them and give them a
little ‘nudge’!

2) Take a minute to sit and think about your requirements-

  • do you need something quick drying?
  • Do you want a nappy which will grow with you baby, or a sized version?
  • Are natural fibres important to you?

These sorts of questions will help to narrow down your choices, and will help you to ensure that your nappy of choice will work out for you.

3) Do some research, and avoid the cheap highstreet brands. Many will end up simply sitting up in your loft because they didn’t do the job properly, leaving you either very disillusioned with cloth, or having to re-invest in a new stash that will work for you.

4) Seek the advise of a local nappy advisor, who may run demonstration mornings or do home visits. You can also do the search on the Go Real Nappy Campaign site for advisors in your region. If there none in your area, most online nappy stores will be more than happy to advise you via email or phone.

5) Ask any questions you may have on parenting forums- many will have a natural parenting or even a cloth nappy section with plenty of mums happy to share their experiences and findings!

6) Consider a Nappy Trial Pack- this will give you the opportunity to test a few different types and see which you prefer before investing in a complete set

7) Read Real Nappy Reviews- impartial reviews from people who have used the different types of nappy will prove invaluable in deciding which ones are for you

8 ) Think about using washable wipes too- if you are already using cloth nappies then cotton wipes are no extra hassle at all. Simply use, wash and re-use! The Cheeky Wipes kits really help to make this a breeze.

9) Remember that its never too late to start using cloth- so if you need some time at first to just get used to being a mummy, take
it and turn to cloth only when you are ready

10) Have fun with it- cloth nappies are not only functional, easy to use, better for your baby, the planet and your wallet
but they are darn cute too!

Be a proud cloth-mummy!

Breastfeeding in public – No problem with the Mamascarf

Breastfeeding in public? No problem!

I can remember being pregnant and thinking about breastfeeding, it was something I knew I definitely wanted to do but it really scared me, not because I thought I might not be able to but the thought of having to do it in public.

Once I had had my little boy and had established breastfeeding, I knew that I had to go and do it. I can remember that first trip out with my friends and their babies to give me more confidence. We sat having a coffee and even with my back to the rest of the café it felt so strange unhooking my bra. I had never had issues on holiday on the beach in a bikini, so why now when I absolutely had to feed my baby?

It did get easier but I was never completely comfortable and there would always be a situation where someone would stare or look on disapprovingly and I would die on the spot. I tried everything to cover up, blankets, muslins, pashminas, you name it but nothing would withstand my wriggly baby and I would end up feeling exposed or he would get too hot. I was envious of those who were so comfortable feeding in public but that was never going to be me! The other thing that I hated about feeding when I was out and about was that the lack of cushions meant that I would get severe arm ache within 5 minutes of starting a feed.

It was on one occasion in the same café that I fed for the first time that I had a light bulb moment. I realised that if I could create something that would cover you while feeding but also provide you with additional support, a type of scarf that wouldn’t fall off would be perfect. Then I remembered that I was currently averaging about 5 hours sleep a night and had baby brain, as if I was in a position to create a new product! However, perhaps due to the excitement about my idea, that night my ever patient husband and I got to work cutting up sheets and making different shapes with them in order to see what would work best.

The Mamascarf in use

A few weeks and many trials down the line and I had come up with my design. Next I realised I needed a name and after lots of consideration Mamascarf was born! Fast forward almost a year and Mamascarf was launched (I have missed out the boring bits about trademarks, fabrics, suppliers etc but you can imagine a lot was involved!). I am now in the scary situation of having my own business. It’s very exciting and I can thoroughly recommend it, although there have definitely been some blood, sweat and tears along the way.

Highs have included being on This Morning, GMTV and finding out that celebrities including Melanie C and Leah Wood love their Mamascarves! Lows have been having my design illegally copied and spotting someone else trading under my name.

Happy Breastfeeding!

Earning Extra Money in the Run up to Christmas

Earning Extra Money in the Run up to Christmas

As Christmas approaches, we could all do with a little extra money. Here are some swift and simple ways to boost the family budget over the next few months.

Sell Something

There are lots of opportunities to earn extra income through direct selling.  To find the best direct selling business, do a little research. Ask friends what they are planning to buy for Christmas. Find out what other direct selling companies are operating in your local area. Last year at my daughter’s school everyone was having Body Shop parties and it got to the point where there
was almost no-one who hadn’t been asked to host. Pick something that is different AND make sure that what the company offers is in the right price range for the people you will be targeting.

Earning Online

If you have a computer there are lots of simple ways to make your money go further and earn cash back, commission or affiliate fees. Start by signing up for a cashback site or two, so when you do your Christmas shopping you get a few percentage of what you spent back in your account. Then, look for opportunities to earn online. You can sign up for affiliate schemes where you promote
a link and get a small amount every time one of your friends or contacts shops through that link. If you’re a BaBeeCard member, for example, you earn £5 credit for everyone you get to sign up.

Look for a Job

In the run up to Christmas lots of businesses need extra help. Spend an afternoon going round your local shopping centre and asking about whether they will be hiring extra staff before Christmas. Wear something reasonably smart: you don’t need to wear your interview suit, but look like you are smart and ready to work. Ask to speak to the manager if possible. You may be asked to supply a CV if they have vacancies, or you could be given a form to take away and fill in.  If they will be looking for staff in coming weeks, make a note of when and where they will advertise vacancies. And if you have a CV, revise it with an emphasis on skills that you have which would be useful in a busy store in the run up
to Christmas.

Remember, whatever way you choose to earn some extra money, persistence pays off. If you don’t get the first job you apply for, keep trying. If you go for direct selling, look beyond your friends for party hosts and target groups and offices too. And if you opt for an affiliate scheme, spread the word to as many people as possible to maximise your earnings.

Half Term On A Budget

Half Term on a Budget

Half term is here, and the kids are looking forward to lots of action packed and exciting days out. But how do you balance the budget when it is nearly the end of the month and Christmas is approaching too? In this article you can get some tips for low cost and no cost activities which will keep all the family happy.

Start by making a plan. Write down the days of the week, and make a list of things that the kids have asked to do, appointments you have to attend and ideas that you have.

Free activities include

  • Dressing up
  • A walk to the park
  • Exploring the local woods
  • Visiting local attractions with no entry fee. Look in the local paper, local parenting magazine and on the local council website for ideas
  • Visiting the library: ask in advance about free half term activities
  • Getting the children to put on a play. This could be based on their own ideas or a book from the library visit.

Low cost activities

  • Giving each child £1 and exploring the local charity shops to see who can get the best toy, book or game
  • Baking. Offer the kids the chance to make their own sandwiches, create an indoor picnic or even bake a cake. This need cost no more than your mealwould have cost anyway, or you can spend a little extra on some treats
  • You could look at special half term activities put on by local attractions as well as Hallowe’en and fireworks events

More activities

If your children have great ides about visiting theme parks, buying new DVDs and computer games and lots of meals out, work out in your head how much you have to spend on half term activities. Look for discounts of 10-45% on days out and theme parks offered by cards like BaBeeCard. This card also offers savings on the London Dungeon, paintball and activity camps.

Booking tickets in advance can save you money too: don’t forget to ask if there are good deals for family tickets. If your kids are old enough, givethem an idea of the budget for half term activities. This can help them weigh up what they really want to do. It might also cut down on requests for you to buy them things if they know that the ‘half term fun’ money is being saved for a great day out thatthe whole family can look forward to.
